The olive tree (Olea europaea) is believed to originate from the eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East, where it has been cultivated for at least 6,000 years — some archaeological finds point to an even longer history. That makes the olive tree one of the very first plants humans learned to systematically cultivate and refine, long before most of today's crops.

A symbol of peace, wisdom and victory

In ancient Greece, the olive tree was sacred to the goddess Athena, and olive branches were given as the victor's prize at the ancient Olympic Games. Noah's dove, which in the Bible returns with an olive leaf, made the olive branch a universal symbol of peace — one still found on flags, coats of arms, and the United Nations' own emblem today.

From the Mediterranean to the rest of the world

The Phoenicians, and later the Greeks and Romans, spread the olive tree across the entire Mediterranean as a central part of trade and agriculture.
